Pregnancy Week 34 - Central Nervous System & Lungs Maturing

At 34 weeks, your baby is about the size of a cantaloupe. The central nervous system and lungs are continuing to mature. If born now, your baby would be considered "late preterm" and would likely need minimal medical assistance. The vernix coating is getting thicker, and your baby is settling into position for birth.

Baby Development This Week

Your baby's central nervous system and lungs are continuing to mature. The lungs are producing more surfactant, and if your baby were born now, they would likely breathe on their own with minimal support. The vernix coating is becoming thicker, protecting your baby's skin. Your baby is likely settling into a head-down position in preparation for birth, though some babies are still changing positions. The fingernails have reached the tips of the fingers, and your baby may scratch themselves in the womb.

Changes in Your Body

You may be feeling increased pelvic pressure as the baby moves lower into the pelvis (called "lightening" or "dropping"). This can make breathing easier but increases pressure on your bladder. You might notice increased vaginal discharge. Fatigue may be setting in as your body works harder to carry the extra weight. You may be experiencing more swelling, especially at the end of the day. Your healthcare visits are likely every two weeks now.
