Baby Development This Week

Your baby can now blink their eyes and has well-developed REM (rapid eye movement) sleep cycles. The brain is developing more wrinkles and grooves, increasing its surface area for more neural connections. Your baby is gaining weight rapidly, and the lanugo hair is beginning to disappear. Eyelashes are present, and your baby can turn their head toward light sources. The lungs are maturing and producing more surfactant. If born now, your baby would have a good chance of survival with medical support.

Changes in Your Body

Your body is working hard in the third trimester. You may be gaining about a pound per week. Your healthcare provider may want to see you every two weeks now. The top of your uterus is about 3 inches above your belly button. You might be experiencing more heartburn, constipation, and back pain. Some women develop restless leg syndrome. You may notice your belly changing shape as the baby shifts positions. Swelling in the feet and ankles is very common.
