Pregnancy Week 23 - Rapid Eye Movements & Hearing Improves

At 23 weeks, your baby is about the size of a grapefruit. Your baby's hearing is well-developed, and they can hear your heartbeat, breathing, and voice. Rapid eye movements are occurring during sleep. The skin is still wrinkled and red but is becoming less translucent as fat accumulates.

Baby Development This Week

Your baby's hearing is now well-developed enough to respond to loud noises. They can hear your heartbeat, breathing, digestion, and voice. Rapid eye movements during sleep suggest your baby may be dreaming. The skin is still wrinkled and reddish, but fat is beginning to fill it out. Blood vessels in the lungs are developing to prepare for breathing air. Your baby has a firm grasp and can hold objects. The pancreas is developing and will soon produce insulin.

Changes in Your Body

You may be feeling strong kicks and punches, and your partner might be able to feel them too. Some women experience swelling in their ankles and feet, especially at the end of the day. You might have trouble sleeping due to your size and the baby's activity. Your growing belly may cause your skin to itch. You might notice darkening of the skin around your nipples and a line down your belly. Some women develop hemorrhoids due to increased pressure.
