Pregnancy Week 22 - Baby Has Eyebrows & Lips Are Forming

At 22 weeks, your baby is about the size of a papaya. Eyebrows and lips are fully formed, and your baby is becoming more responsive to sounds and touch. The lungs are developing, though they are not yet ready to breathe air. Your baby now has a regular sleep-wake cycle.

Baby Development This Week

Your baby's features are becoming more refined — lips, eyelids, and eyebrows are more distinct. The eyes are formed but the irises still lack pigment. Your baby's grip is getting stronger, and they may hold onto the umbilical cord. The lungs are developing rapidly, with the airways branching into smaller tubes. Surfactant, a substance that helps the lungs inflate, is beginning to be produced. Your baby now has a regular pattern of sleeping and waking.

Changes in Your Body

Your belly is definitely showing, and you may be getting comments from others. Some women begin to experience pelvic pain or pressure as the baby grows. You might notice your belly button has popped out. Your skin may be itchy as it stretches over your growing abdomen. You may be gaining weight more steadily now. Some women develop carpal tunnel syndrome, causing numbness or tingling in the hands.
