First Trimester 12 weeks pregnant

Pregnancy Week 12 - End of First Trimester & Reflexes Develop

Congratulations on reaching 12 weeks! This marks the end of your first trimester. Your baby has developed reflexes and can open and close fingers, curl toes, and make sucking movements. The risk of miscarriage drops significantly after this milestone.

Baby Development This Week

Your baby's reflexes are developing rapidly and now include opening and closing fingers, curling toes, and puckering lips. The intestines, which had been growing outside the body in the umbilical cord, are now moving into the abdomen. The kidneys are producing urine, which your baby releases into the amniotic fluid. Vocal cords are forming, and the brain is developing rapidly. Baby's face is looking more human with eyes that have moved from the sides to the front of the head.

Changes in Your Body

The end of the first trimester often brings relief from nausea and fatigue for many women. Your uterus has risen above the pubic bone, and you may have a noticeable baby bump. You might hear your baby's heartbeat for the first time using a Doppler at your prenatal visit. Increased blood volume may cause your face to look flushed. You might still experience some food aversions, but your appetite may be returning.
