Pregnancy Week 10 - Bones Harden & Vital Organs Working

At 10 weeks, your baby is about the size of a kumquat. Bones are beginning to harden from cartilage, and all vital organs including the brain, liver, and kidneys are functioning. Your baby can now swallow and kick, though you will not feel it yet.

Baby Development This Week

This is a milestone week. Your baby's bones are starting to ossify (harden from cartilage), beginning with the skull and long bones. All vital organs are now functioning: the brain is producing hormones, the liver is making bile, the kidneys are producing urine. Your baby is swallowing amniotic fluid and producing urine, which helps develop the digestive system. Tiny fingernails are beginning to form. The eyes are now covered by fused eyelids that will remain closed until around week 27.

Changes in Your Body

You may notice a small but definite baby bump forming, especially if this is not your first pregnancy. The placenta is now fully functional and taking over hormone production. Your morning sickness may begin to ease slightly, though some women continue to experience it. You might feel warmer than usual due to increased blood volume. Some women develop a dark line down the center of their belly, called the linea nigra.
