Third Trimester 41 weeks pregnant

Pregnancy Week 41 - Overdue & Monitoring Your Baby

At 41 weeks, you are considered "late term." While it can be frustrating to go past your due date, it is very common — about 30% of pregnancies extend beyond 40 weeks. Your provider will monitor you closely with regular checkups and may discuss induction options.

Baby Development This Week

Your baby continues to grow and gain weight, about half an ounce per day. The skin may become slightly drier as the vernix continues to disappear. Your baby is still receiving nutrients and oxygen through the placenta, which remains functional. The hair and nails continue to grow. Most of the lanugo has shed. Your baby is likely still very active, though with less room to move, movements may feel more like stretches and rolls than kicks.

Changes in Your Body

Going past your due date is frustrating but very common. Your provider will likely schedule more frequent monitoring, including non-stress tests and biophysical profiles to check on your baby's well-being. You may be dilated and effaced but not in active labor yet. Your provider will discuss induction options with you, which may include membrane stripping, prostaglandin gel, Pitocin, or breaking your water. You might be feeling anxious, impatient, and very uncomfortable.

Tips for Week 41
  • Stay calm and trust the process — many babies need a little extra time.
  • Attend all monitoring appointments to ensure your baby is doing well.
  • Discuss induction options and timing with your healthcare provider.
  • Try natural methods to encourage labor: walking, sex, acupuncture, or spicy food (only if your provider approves).
When to Call Your Doctor
