Pregnancy Week 39 - Full Term & Baby Could Come Any Day

At 39 weeks, your baby is full term — the optimal time for delivery. Babies born at 39-40 weeks have the best outcomes. Your baby is fully developed and could arrive any day. Your body is making final preparations for labor and birth.

Baby Development This Week

Your baby is now full term, which means all organs and systems are fully developed and functioning optimally. The lungs are mature, the brain is ready, and the immune system is equipped with your antibodies. Your baby is still gaining about half an ounce of fat per day and shedding the remaining vernix. The placenta is continuing to provide antibodies that will protect your baby for the first months of life. Your baby is likely in the head-down position, ready for birth.

Changes in Your Body

Your body is making final preparations for labor. You may be dilated several centimeters and effaced. The baby is likely engaged deep in your pelvis, which may cause increased pelvic pressure and difficulty walking. You might experience more frequent and intense Braxton Hicks contractions, which can be hard to distinguish from early labor. Some women lose their mucous plug or have a bloody show. You may be feeling a mix of excitement, anxiety, and impatience. Your provider will discuss induction options if you go past your due date.
