Pregnancy Week 19 - Vernix Coating & Five Senses Developing

At 19 weeks, your baby is about the size of a mango. A protective white coating called vernix caseosa is covering your baby's skin. All five senses are now developing: the brain is designating specialized areas for smell, taste, hearing, vision, and touch.

Baby Development This Week

This is an exciting week for sensory development. Your baby's brain is designating specialized areas for each of the five senses. The vernix caseosa, a cheesy white coating, is forming on your baby's skin to protect it from the amniotic fluid. Your baby is producing meconium, the first bowel movement, which will typically be passed after birth. If you are having a girl, her uterus and vagina are forming. If a boy, his testes are descending.

Changes in Your Body

You might be feeling stronger, more frequent kicks and rolls. Some women experience sharp pains in their sides when they move quickly — this is round ligament pain. Your skin may be changing: some women develop dark patches on their face called chloasma or the "mask of pregnancy." Your belly button may be popping out. You may have trouble sleeping due to your growing size and the baby's movements.
