Pregnancy Week 16 - Baby Hears Sounds & Eyes Become Sensitive

At 16 weeks, your baby is about the size of an avocado. The ears are developing and your baby may start to hear some sounds. Eyes are becoming sensitive to light, and your baby is making more coordinated movements. If you are having a girl, millions of eggs are already forming in her ovaries.

Baby Development This Week

Your baby's ears are now close to their final position on the sides of the head, and the bones of the inner ear are forming. Your baby may begin to hear very muffled sounds. The eyes are becoming sensitive to light, though the eyelids remain fused shut. Your baby's body is growing rapidly, and the head is becoming more proportionate. The circulatory system is fully functional, and your baby's heart is pumping about 25 quarts of blood per day.

Changes in Your Body

Your bump is likely becoming more noticeable, and you may need maternity clothes. Some women begin to feel fluttery movements called quickening around this time, especially if this is not their first pregnancy. Your uterus is about halfway between your pubic bone and belly button. You might notice your skin glowing due to increased blood circulation. Back pain may begin as your growing belly shifts your center of gravity.
