Baby Development This Week

Your baby's facial muscles are developing, allowing for expressions like squinting, frowning, and grimacing. Fine, downy hair called lanugo is growing all over the body to help regulate temperature. The thyroid gland is producing hormones, and the liver is making bile. Your baby is practicing breathing movements, moving the diaphragm up and down. The arms are now proportionate to the rest of the body, though the legs still have some catching up to do.

Changes in Your Body

Your appetite may be returning as nausea subsides. You might feel occasional sharp pains in your lower abdomen — these are round ligament pains as your uterus stretches. Some women experience increased sex drive during the second trimester due to improved blood flow and reduced discomfort. You may notice your areolas darkening and expanding. The top of your uterus is now just above your pubic bone.
